Born into poverty in Victorian England, Jem Mace rose from the harsh streets of Norwich to become the world's most celebrated prizefighter.
His courage, determination and showmanship carried boxing out of the fields and the back rooms, and turned a brutal underground spectacle into a respected international sport.
Travelling across Britain, America and Australia, Mace faced legendary opponents, survived personal tragedy, and became one of the first true global sporting superstars. Yet for all he changed about the sport, his own story has largely been forgotten.
